Loved this lake and campground. Turns are a little tight around the loops but well worth it for the outdoor experience. Electric and water are available. Wild horses roam the area. High elevation so cool in the summer! Going back next year!
4 stars due to cleanliness of toilets but use our own anyway!
Warm showers, clean restrooms, wide variety of campsites. Some with lake views and some with canyon views. Felt very safe. Friendly Park Hosts and Park Ranger patrol regularly. Beautiful location for amazing sunsets and star gazing. On the downside, you may be disturbed by dogs barking at night. A few hiking trails. Reservation only sites become First Come First Serve after mid September.
I stayed at site 38 in the Pinon Campground two nights the weekend before the 4th of July. The grounds were very busy but there were ample walk-up lots available when I arrived. After exploring the grounds it did seem that the reserved spots were better than the walk-ups (duh) so if you are able to plan your stay in advance I would definitely recommend making a reservation. The lake was beautiful and it would be a great place for any kind of water sport. I hiked the two trails that spurred from the campgrounds. Hiking boots, steady feet, and an adventurous spirit are recommended for both. That being said I highly recommend both trails! The campground showers were ok and I had plenty of warm water. The vault toilets were clean enough but were hit-or-miss on whether they were stocked with TP. Before leaving I refilled my water tank and dumped my gray water. For $10/night I couldn't ask for much more! I would stay here again.
They have nice playground, restrooms throughout the campground, a shower building with flush toilets, it's dog friendly with leashes, beautiful picnic areas for day use, great views, the lake is beautiful, plenty of places to walk and hike with gorgeous views, lots of ranger coverage. My only negative and it's more of a personal issue because I'm new to RVing and some of the sites are difficult for someone like me to access and to get level. Since I had never been here, I didn't know what we're the more "choice" locations for a class C RV. I will definitely be back!
First time her
We already booked a reservation we liked the area so much
We were one of two campers that stayed here. It's easy to get off I-40 and up the hill to the campground . The electric was good with no issues, spot was level and a pull through. It was wonderfully quiet and peaceful. The dump station was easy to navigate even with our toad hooked up. Everything was pretty well locked and shutdown because we were way passed the season dates. Would come back again.
Travelling on I40 between Albuquerque, NM and Sedona, AZ; decided to stay to wait out the snow storm. The park is great; lots of amenities. The staff are incredible. Mae was so welcoming; we had no cell service and she offered to help us in any way she could. The snow was deep with more coming. The next morning, we decided to give the roads a go. Made it out & met May in Thoreau, NM to say thank you. Stop at Lil’s Cafe.
Great place! Quiet. Not far off the highway, but with a feeling of seclusion. Only problem is when you reserve a space there's no way of knowing if the spot requires a lot of leveling of the RV. We did the best we could but we're slightly off the bubble. Water didn't drain too well from the sink and tub because of this. More campsite information would be helpful.
